A Little Bit Andrea

Who didn’t love Alexis’ letter A necklace on Schitt’s Creek?! It became an instant icon and must-have and because of that it’s been knocked off a million times. The key to taking inspiration from another artist is the way in which the original design is modified. In this necklace, the angles of the A are different, it’s silver, the chain is different as is the attachment of the chain and the two birthstones representing my client’s daughters have been added. Challenges arise with a piece like this where the client says- “I want this” but “this” already exists in the world and is made by another artist or company. As a designer, my job is to take the clients wishes and transform them into a new piece… or tell them to purchase from the other brand. In this case the birthstones were a key addition to her necklace and really separated her necklace from the original. After some Googling I found the original necklace comes from Anthropology and is only offered in brass with no option to add stones. I feel confident that the two pieces are quite different but I’d love some feedback- what do you think?
